Arsenal are in dire need of a centre-back or two this summer. There is no getting away from that fact. The current options Unai Emery are either far from reliable, have troubles with injuries or are just simply getting too old to be a regular member of the first-team in the Premier League.
The Spaniard will have a better idea of the type of player he needs to target in the upcoming transfer window and turn his side into a dominant force, especially away from home as their form leaves plenty to be desired.
And, Everton’s Michael Keane might just be the ideal candidate to help the Gunners become even stronger and better at the back.
The 26-year-old would be perfect for the Spaniard to try and build his team around over the long-term future as the former Burnley defender has shown that he can play at the top level.
His stats within the Premier League this season make those suggestions further evident, as he is just behind Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk when it comes down to tackles, aerial duels and clearances per game (per The Daily Cannon).
Still only 26-years-old, the defender is certainly someone a club like Arsenal would be able to bring into the team and build their squad around, whilst he would also be an immediate upgrade on the other options already in north London.
As mentioned, the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have all had varying issues at the back and have looked far from assured in Emery’s setup at times this season.
But, Michael Keane would complete Arsenal’s defence as the central defender is the kind of player who can bring all of the Gunners’ current batch of defenders on leaps and bounds, with defensive solidity always ensured.
His ability to play out from the back is something that makes him a rather attractive proposition, whilst his aerial presence in the opposition area (as well as his own) is something Arsenal could look to capitalise on, as the Gunners have only found the back of the net four times with their head (per the official Premier League website).
What would also be appealing is the fact that Keane is rather disciplined as well, especially in the light of Sokartis’ two-game ban for his 10 yellow cards. The England international has only picked up two all season, which is rather impressive considering that he is a centre-back.
Everton are thought to value their key defender at the £50million-mark and extremely reluctant to sell, which could be rather difficult for Arsenal to match with reports claiming that Emery could have a rather limited transfer budget in the summer.
However, with the attack pretty much sorted, and just the issue of finding a replacement for Aaron Ramsey, should they be able to offload the likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan from their books, the Gunners could be able to raise the capital for the Toffees’ defender.
If they are in the position to do that, then Emery and Arsenal must do all they can to bring Keane to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
