Introducing: Rafa Silva, the man to light up St. James’ Park - Introducing

Transfer windows aren’t usually the most enjoyable times for Newcastle fans. Indeed, St. James’ Park rarely welcomes big money signings, although in January they brought in Miguel Almiron, and this summer they could be set go big once again. According to Renascenca, the Magpies are after the Portuguese winger Rafa Silva, although he won’t come cheap.

The Benfica man is one of those spearheading his side’s race for the Portuguese league title, and he was key to the Eagles making it into the Europa League quarter-finals where they were eventually bested by Eintracht Frankfurt. In a side full of talent with players like Joao Felix, Alejandro Grimaldo, Ruben Dias and Pizzi, Rafa Silva doesn’t always stand out, but at Newcastle, he’d be a star.

The 25-year-old has all the makings of a successful Premier League winger. His end product in Portugal has been incredible and with 19 goals all coming from his position out wide he’d be the man to finally end the Magpies’ left-wing woes. The current wingers on the Geordies’ payroll are Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy, and it’s fair to say that Silva would be a huge upgrade on both of those.

Between the two of them, Atsu and Murphy have scored 20 goals since the beginning of the 2016/17 season. Meanwhile, in just this season alone so far Rafa Silva has 19 strikes to his name. It’s a no-brainer if you’re looking at who the better player is, and you can’t blame Rafa Benitez for having him high up on his list of players to bring to the Northeast of England.

The fee could be a stumbling block. Rafa was signed by Benfica for around £14 million and has only improved since then. Then when you factor in his £51.3 million release clause and the fact that the Portuguese giants will want to make a substantial profit and Mike Ashley will be laughing at the Newcastle fans.

However, it is possible – the Chronicle reported some time ago that Benitez could be offered the chance to sign another marquee signing, after all – and it would just take a lot of money and someone to convince Ashley that it will be worth it in the long run.
