Roy Hodgson seems absolutely desperate to keep Michy Batshuayi at Crystal Palace — and it is not hard to understand why.
The Belgian has impressed during his loan spell at Selhurst Park, grabbing a brace in his last outing against Bournemouth, and Hodgson now seems determined to hold onto him for at least another season.
“If Michy Batshuayi was going to be available, either on loan or buy him, I would be very happy with that,” the Eagles boss told the Evening Standard.
Should the south London club be unable to convince Chelsea into letting them retain Batshuayi, though, then they are likely to quickly turn their attention to Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic.
According to the Daily Express, the 24-year-old is a summer target for the Premier League outfit, a summer target who looks perfect for them.
In fact, all things considered, the Serbian would probably be a better fit than Batshuayi for the Eagles in the long run.
For as good as the Chelsea loanee has been, he cannot hold the ball up as well as Mitrovic and his overall link-up play is just not as efficient.
And that is what Hodgson expects his centre-forwards to excel at — not just scoring goals. It is probably why the former England manager has persisted with a misfiring Christian Benteke.
The Belgium international is a No.9 Hodgson has faith in to do the above due to his height and strength.
In Mitrovic, Hodgson could find a striker who could do all of that and score goals. Even in an atrocious Fulham side, he managed to do just that.
Given the goals he has brought to the side, Hodgson should still absolutely go all out for Batshuayi.
But as far as alternatives go, he will struggle to find a better one than Mitrovic all summer.
