According to The Evening Standard, Arsenal are hopeful of signing Ivan Perišić before the end of the transfer window this week.
The Croatian has handed in a transfer request at current club Inter Milan, with a deal expected to be confirmed imminently.
Of course, this is a great signing for Arsenal, as the 29-year-old is not only a World Cup finalist, and goal scorer, but brings a huge amount of experience due to an extensive career in Italy, Belgium and Germany, where he won silverware with both Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg.
However, while the winger’s arrival will please many Arsenal fans, there is one player that may miss out as a consequence, and that is Alex Iwobi.
The 22-year-old Iwobi has been in good form under Unai Emery so far this season, making 13 starts so far in the Premier League, managing two goals and four assists. However, if the manager has the choice between the Nigeria international and Perišić to partner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the other flank, he would surely lose that battle. This is simply because, at this moment in time, he is not yet at the level of the Croat.
Moreover, should Emery opt to play with a diamond in the midfield, that does not exactly open a space up for an out-and-out winger like Iwobi. On the other hand, Perišić is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder. It is versatility like this that makes him such an asset to any club, and why it does not bode well for Iwobi.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
