Despite beating Fulham 4-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday to end a run of three consecutive Premier League draws, albeit from the penalty spot, Manchester United conceded yet another goal in what has been a poor season for the team defensively.
As a result, Jose Mourinho is likely to push Ed Woodward into signing a new central defender next month with the Manchester United chief executive having failed to do so in the previous transfer window.
On top of another centre-half, though, the Red Devils could also do with another right-back and Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka might just be the ideal individual for Mourinho in that position.
Portugal U21 international Diogo Dalot was brought in over the summer to reinforce that area of the squad and, to his credit, he has impressed whenever he has played.
However, with Antonio Valencia on the rapid decline and not getting any younger while Matteo Darmian is clearly surplus to requirements, Manchester United will need another right-back going forward regardless of Dalot’s arrival with Wan-Bissaka looking like the perfect candidate.
It is well-known that Mourinho is not keen on both of his full-backs constantly bombing forward, preferring at least one of the two to be defensively sound and aware of his responsibilities when the team are without the ball.
And in Wan-Bissaka, the Portuguese coach would have just that. Like Cesar Azpilicueta, who was Mourinho’s dream full-back at Chelsea, Wan-Bissaka is so strong in 1v1 situations.
Rarely does a Premier League winger get past the 21-year-old who has both the pace and tackling ability to stop them in the tracks.
With Luke Shaw on the other side who is a much better full-back going forward, Mourinho would have what he deems as an ideal full-back pairing.
