It is no secret that Bundesliga clubs have proverbially struck gold when it comes to pilfering young talent from the Premier League.
Given English clubs’ proclivity to spend money and make big signings and look further afield, young talent gets overlooked, and subsequently, players struggle for game time. This is something that has plagued the Premier League for a long time, has stultified the development of many players, and has even affected the national team’s success.
Already this season, Jadon Sancho is an example of a player that was not deemed good enough in Man City’s academy and sold to German giants Borussia Dortmund. This season he already has six goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga, and is developing a status as one of the league’s most exciting players.
Therefore, it was recently reported in The Independent by Miguel Delaney that Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has attracted interest from the Bundesliga.
The 17-year-old Jones made his debut for the first team in their third-round loss to Wolves recently, and is highly thought of by manager Jürgen Klopp. He’s a central midfielder that is renowned for his strong dribbling ability and passing game, and could be the long-term option to replace the likes of James Milner and Jordan Henderson.
However, the England under-18 international is very unlikely to break into the Liverpool setup any time soon. With The Reds flying high currently, it is almost impossible to imagine the club giving a player so young and inexperienced a chance. However, a loan deal could be something that would suit Liverpool, and whichever Bundesliga side that signs him.
It’s clear that German clubs are willing to take the step that Premier League clubs are not and give young players an opportunity. They will be licking their lips at the thought of signing Jones, and this may be the new platform to work your way into a Premier League club- by performing in Germany.
