Man City face a defining week in their season, traveling to Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham in the space of six days.
After two lacklustre performances in the Champions League so far this season, Man City really must earn back to back wins against the Ukrainian side tonight in order to make a statement in the competition. They need to be impressive wins as well.
The thing that Pep Guardiola will be grateful for is the depth of his squad. He was able to rotate and rest players after the international break, with many of the players coming in putting on powerful displays as the Premier League champions brushed aside Burnley on Saturday.
Riyad Mahrez started against Sean Dyche’s men and starred for The Cityzens, and made an impressive claim to be a starter for The Blues. Guardiola may be targeting Tottenham at Wembley, and may think about resting some players against Shakhtar this evening.
This is no discredit to the Ukrainian side, but it is a reality of football. However, Guardiola still has a huge amount of talent to call upon. One of those players is Raheem Sterling. The winger was rested after starring for England in the heroic victory in Spain, and could start again this week.
Man City need to make a serious statement in the Champions League this season, and may be reliant on Sterling’s attacking flair to make that statement. He may well earn himself a starting berth for the trip to Wembley, however, Guardiola knows that his team will be strong no matter what.
