Aston Villa have struggled to ensure consistency in recent times after an impressive start to life under Dean Smith, with their promotion hopes slowly vanishing.
The Villains will need to get a move on if they are to stand any chance of securing a play-off spot in the current campaign, with the January transfer window providing them with the perfect opportunity to strengthen.
However, with Tammy Abraham’s future currently up in the air at Villa Park, perhaps Smith should start weighing up potential replacements for the Englishman.
So, this month could turn out be a pivotal period for the Midlands club.
Tammy Abraham is understood to be closing in on a loan move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which comes as a huge blow for Aston Villa. The Englishman has been simply sensational so far this season, scoring 16 goals in 20 Championship appearances.
Indeed, interest from a Premier League side appears to have turned his head, so the Villains should start looking for a replacement for the forward.
Dean Smith should turn his attention to his old club Brentford, as Neal Maupay has been excellent this season.
This would be a very ambitious move by Smith as the attacker has established himself as one of the standout performers in the Championship and has attracted interest from the top-flight, with Premier League side Huddersfield Town previously plotting an eight-figure bid.
Of course, securing the services of the Frenchman would be a big statement of intent as he could easily be playing Premier League football, with a big signing being Villa’s only promotion hope.
The forward has produced 15 goals and six assists in the current campaign, so he could definitely fill the huge void that could be left by Tammy Abraham. His ability to provide for teammates is something that Abraham struggled to do during his time at Villa Park, so the 22-year-old is able to offer a different dynamic.
Therefore, with a consistent flow of goals guaranteed and the ability to provide assists, Aston Villa fans would soon forget about Abraham if Dean Smith launches a swoop for Maupay.
