Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi certainly has many strengths, but equally has some weaknesses.
The German defender is very calm and composed with the ball at his feet, which is not only a huge asset in modern football, but particularly suits new manager Unai Emery. Additionally, his style of defending is quite unique, where he can close down attackers very well and make interceptions.
On the other hand, this can also be deemed the player’s weakness, as his proclivity to rush attackers leads to him committing a number of fouls and penalties. He is therefore often responsible for a number of goals that Arsenal concede, which is a major black mark next to his name. Furthermore, he is quite weak for a centre-back, and while that allows him to be slightly more mobile, it also means that he comes off second best against a lot of attackers.
With this in mind, the German has never fully won over all of the fans at Arsenal, with many calling for him to be replaced in the future. Luckily for Emery, he has players at his disposal that could make this a reality, one of those players being Konstantinos Mavropanos.
The Greek defender seems to be built in the mould of an old-fashioned defender. He stands at 6ft 4, and is a much more imposing figure than Mustafi. His physical style of play and aerial strength could make him the defender that Arsenal are looking for after years of slightly flimsy centre-backs. Additionally, at only 20-years-old, Emery has the opportunity to shape him into the defender that he wants him to be.
He joined Arsenal at the beginning of the year, and was one of the first signings that head of recruitment Sven Mislintat made. That shows the pedigree of the player and the fact that he is highly thought of. Unfortunately, injury has prevented him from featuring this season, but make no mistake about it, he is one for the future, and likely to be the one to replace Mustafi.Like what the TT have on offer?
