There are many things that Steven Gerrard was famous for throughout his playing career, but one of the main things was his ability to score goals from midfield.
The Liverpool legend scored 186 goals for his club, which is a pretty good return for a midfielder, and it was a reputation which put him amongst some of the best in the world.
However, the thing that must pain him the most whilst at Rangers this season, is his team’s apparent lack of ability to score goals from midfield like he did. The club rely heavily on their strikers to produce the goods, which, in all fairness, most teams should. But goals from midfield are pivotal to any good team, as most great sides will have players with those capabilities.
Fortunately, Gerrard may have a player at his disposal that could be the answer to this problem, Greg Docherty. The midfielder is currently on loan at League One outfit Shrewsbury Town, where he is having a hugely impressive season. The 22-year-old already has four goals and two assists this season, and only looks like getting better.
Docherty has the acute sense to get in the box at the right time, which is an understanding that some midfielders do not have, and is a great asset to any team. If continues the progress that he is showing already this season, there is nothing from stopping him being a major player at Ibrox next season. He has a few more months to ply his trade in League One and progress, but he will definitely be a player that is on Gerrard’s radar, and someone that should be part of his future plans.
