Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly with the Daily Mirror the latest outlet to report the club’s interest in the central defender.
Manchester United, however, are likely to face fierce competition for his signature, and one team that should definitely be looking to throw their hat in the ring alongside the Red Devils are Liverpool.
Liverpool’s need for a new centre-back is not as pressing as Manchester United’s. In fact, defensively, the Reds have been solid this season.
The 10 Premier League goals they have conceded so far is less than any other outfit, while no team have bettered the 10 clean sheets earned by Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Going forward, though, the addition of another centre-half such as Koulibaly could go some way given how unconvincing Dejan Lovren can be at the back.
Simply put, the 27-year-old would be a gigantic upgrade on the Liverpool man and the perfect partner for Virgil van Dijk.
Together, the two could form quite possibly the most solid central defensive partnership in Europe.
For the last few years now, Koulibaly has been playing at a world-class level that probably would have been picked up if he was at a team with a bigger profile than Napoli.
In Serie A, the Senegal international has been so dominant in his duels with his aerial prowess and strong tackling. On top of that, he has also developed into a central defender capable of starting attacks by bringing the ball out of defence and playing line-breaking passes thanks to the tutelage of Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.
The chance to give their backline a massive boost while preventing a potential title rival in the future from strengthening is too much of an amazing opportunity for Liverpool to turn away from.
