Given the season that Lawrence Shankland has had in Scotland, I’m sure many Nottingham Forest fans would be keen to add the 23-year-old to their ranks. Shankland’s contract has expired at Ayr United and following the announcement that he will depart the club, the Reds have emerged as one of multiple clubs that have been monitoring his situation, according to the Scottish Sun.
It makes perfect sense for Martin O’Neill’s side to target Shankland. The former Scotland under-21 international may not have made the grade at Aberdeen having been released in 2017, but since then he helped fire Ayr United into the Scottish Premiership as league title winners, having scored 27 goals and assisted 16 in 32 games in the League and Cup that season.
Last season, he managed to keep up with that attacking output, netting 34 times and assisting eight across all competitions, which, to no surprise, will have made some of the English sides take notice.
Now, the Scottish and English Championships are not really comparable, but the division has given Shankland the chance to display how remarkably clinical he is in-and-around the box as a result of his wise movement and positioning to find himself in the right place at the right time ever so often.
Forest had their own rather clinical goal scorer in Lewis Grabban last season, particularly in the first half of the season and could continue to be for that man next year or two. But with the 31-year-old getting no younger, it seems the perfect opportunity for a younger player to be brought in to play second fiddle to Grabban at first and learn from the prolific Championship-scorer.
It may take time for Shankland to adapt to the division, so gradually easing him into it may be a wise move. Indeed, it could be one that could pay dividends in years to come if he was to establish himself as the starting number nine at the City Ground as he certainly has the potential to do so.
