N’Golo Kante was a crucial part in Leicester City’s title-winning campaign and as a result, Chelsea spent £32 million on the energetic midfielder.
Arsenal had been interested in Kante before Chelsea came in with more money. The Gunners have needed a midfielder who can do a defensive job and haven’t had one since Gilberto Silva left the club.
Especially with Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park, Arsenal have needed someone who can do his defensive work and not leave the Gunners exposed at the back.
Over the summer, Arsenal signed Sampdoria midfielder, Lucas Torreira for a £26 million fee, and the combative Uruguayan has been an instant hit at the side.
During his time in Italy, Torreira established himself as one of the top talents in the league. He has the ability to read the game well, break up opposition attacks and has an incredible amount of energy.
In an Arsenal side, that relies so much on its midfield duo to start attacks, while also being able to cover for their advancing fullbacks, Torreira has been crucial.
He’s played 11 games in the league this season and had his best game for the club against Liverpool at the weekend. Against a Liverpool side that transitions at pace, Torreira’s ability to cover ground was a major part in Arsenal being able to hold them to a draw.
At 22, it’s incredible to see how well Torreira is playing. His game is completely suited to the Premier League and thanks to his level of play, Granit Xhaka has also improved. After missing out on Kante a few years ago, it looks as though the Gunners have finally found their defensive battler.
Indeed, he might be the strongest central midfielder since the great Gilberto Silva, giving Unai Emery’s side a ruthless edge at long last.
