Under Dean Smith, things have picked up for Aston Villa in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Bolton at home last night coming as the latest win for the club.
And with a long way still to go in the season, promotion to the Premier League may not be out of sight yet for the Villans.
Smith’s side, however, will have to improve defensively if that is to be the case, something which a former Villa man could easily help out with.
Gary Cahill is currently on the periphery at Chelsea with Maurizio Sarri preferring David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger as his centre-back options.
As a result, Cahill has admitted he could now leave Stamford Bridge in search of more playing time (Daily Mirror). And with the January transfer window fast approaching, an opportunity to land the 32-year-old could present itself to Aston Villa, which would be huge.
£9m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Cahill is still very much a capable defender who would give Aston Villa a huge boost at the back. Against Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night in Chelsea’s 3-2 victory, he did look a bit rusty and shaky at times.
But in the previous round versus Liverpool, the Villa youth product put in a dominant performance, showing he can still play at a high level.
His experience in the game means there is likely to be Premier League interest come January, but the Villa Park hierarchy would be silly to not at least consider throwing their hat into the ring for the Chelsea captain’s services.
