Tottenham failed to bring in any new recruits over the summer and so far this season, it’s showed as Spurs have been fairly inconsistent this season.
After the World Cup, a lot of Tottenham players have come back fatigued and worse still, injured. Harry Kane and Dele Alli all have returned far from full fitness and so far, the team’s performances smack of a side that needs freshening up.
Over the years, Moussa Dembele has proven himself to be one of the better players in the league and has been a rock for Mauricio Pochettino. This season, however, the Belgium international has struggled to replicate the same level of play and Tottenham need to find his long-term replacement.
With that in mind, the north London club should look to one of their rivals for a replacement for the Belgian and one player that could be available is Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Like most Chelsea academy players, Loftus-Cheek has never really been given the chance to shine at the club. The powerful, yet skilful midfielder was one of the best academy players during his time playing for Chelsea’s youth sides as he won two FA Youth Cups and a UEFA Youth League title.
However, as the managers come and go, so do the chances of academy players progressing into the first-team and at the moment, he’s only made two appearances in the league for Sarri.
Last season with Crystal Palace, the 22-year-old midfielder played 24 games for Roy Hodgson’s side and was a key part in the side that managed to remain in the league despite a terrible start.
While he may not be able to replicate Dembele’s level of play straight away, the potential is there for Loftus-Cheek to be a superb central midfielder. He has the technique, the physicality and the ability to drive forward that could be a great fit for Pochettino’s side.
It may be a gamble, but with Dembele ageing and Spurs desperately needing a midfielder, it may be one that they could be wise in taking.
