# Newcastle United: Loris Karius could leave by Monday

**Loris Karius could reportedly leave [Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/) by Monday because of a clause in his contract.**

### The Lowdown: Karius signs

The 29-year-old was [signed](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12695960/newcastle-sign-former-liverpool-goalkeeper-loris-karius-on-short-term-contract) as a free agent on a short-term contract until January, with [Eddie Howe](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/eddie-howe/) praising him as a ‘[very good goalkeeper](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/12695960/newcastle-sign-former-liverpool-goalkeeper-loris-karius-on-short-term-contract)‘ upon his arrival on Tyneside.

However, the German is still [yet to make](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/85864/plus/0?saison=&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) a first-team appearance at St James’ Park and seems to have been pushed further down the pecking order by Martin Dubravka, who [played](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/martin-dubravka/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/74960/plus/0?saison=2022&verein=762&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) in the 2-1 loss at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup last weekend after his loan spell at Manchester United ended recently.

### The Latest: Could leave soon

As per [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-newcastle-star-loris-karius-in-line-to-quit-on-monday/), Newcastle have until Monday 16 January to decide whether to extend or end Karius’ deal on Tyneside, due to a clause in his contract.

His future has been ‘complicated’ by the early return of Dubravka, which has left Howe with [five](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/startseite/verein/762) senior goalkeepers in his squad.

### The Verdict: Let him go…

With Dubravka’s return, Newcastle simply have no need to keep Karius at the club, so they should just let him go.

Hailed as a ‘[mentality monster](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-liverpool-eddie-howe-deal-25713221)‘ by his agent Corey Anton for his mental recovery after making [two howlers](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44258022) which cost Liverpool the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018, the German is still [experienced](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/85864/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=GB1&pos=&trainer_id=) at Premier League level.

However, the Magpies can also call upon the likes of [Nick Pope](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tag/nick-pope/) and Karl Darlow alongside Dubravka to play in goal, so the 29-year-old is no longer needed.

He also earns [£20,000 per week](https://fbref.com/en/squads/b2b47a98/2022-2023/wages/Newcastle-United-Wage-Details) at St James’ Park, so losing him would also help to free up the wage bill slightly ahead of any potential January incomings.
