Celtic: Jeremie Frimpong sell-on clause a ‘good piece of business’

Stade Louis II, Monaco, France - February 23, 2023. Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong in action with AS Monaco's Aleksandr Golovin.

Celtic completed a ‘good piece of business’ negotiating a sell-on clause with Bayer Leverkusen in the deal for Jeremie Frimpong, according to pundit Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: The story so far

The Dutchman departed the Scottish Premiership and jetted off to the Bundesliga to join Xabi Alonso’s side back in 2021, with reports claiming that the Hoops managed to slip a ‘sizeable’ sell-on fee into the transfer when in talks with the German giants.

Football Insider reported in February that Manchester United are plotting a move for the right-back in the upcoming window, with a fee of between £40-50m expected to be demanded as a result of his contract not expiring until 2025.

The BayArena star admitted during an interview last year that it was ‘amazing to be back home’ when the two sides met in Glasgow, so he clearly still has a lot of love for the club and he could be about to secure them a nice financial reward.

The Latest: McAvennie’s verdict

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie was asked whether Frimpong potentially joining the Red Devils would be a positive for Celtic, to which he replied:

“Of course it is.

“Everything counts but Celtic are in a good place at the moment. They are getting money, they have done well in business.

“£40/£50m, Celtic should get another £5m so that is a good piece of business. I think it was Peter Lawwell that did that.

“I think he is a good player as well. I do not know whether he would be too short for the Premier League though. But, what he lacks in height he makes up for in everything else he does. He would be an interesting one if he was to go there.“

The Verdict: Huge boost

Frimpong is having a blinder of a season at Bayer Leverkusen and whether he moves elsewhere this summer or not, Celtic are set for a huge boost whenever the time does come.

The Amsterdam native has racked up 14 goal contributions (eight assists and six goals) in 31 appearances across all competitions this term so will be the subject of a significant offer should potential suitors want to prise him away.

The Bhoys will have no problem attracting transfer targets given their level of success but this sell-on fee will undoubtedly help them generate funds towards pursuing some of the most elite players.
