# Sunderland: Jewison Bennette ‘will be back’ in squad vs Rotherham

**[Sunderland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/) forward Jewison Bennette ‘will be back’ for tonight’s [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/) game vs Rotherham, according to journalist [Scott Wilson](https://twitter.com/Scottwilsonecho).**

### The Lowdown: Absence explained

The Costa Rica international arrived at the Stadium of Light [last summer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jewison-bennette/transfers/spieler/743627) and has since made [15](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jewison-bennette/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/743627) senior appearances across all competitions, but was [absent](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jewison-bennette/leistungsdaten/spieler/743627) from Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Bristol City.

The Black Cats winger wasn’t reported to have sustained an injury prior to the game, though Tony Mowbray has since [revealed](https://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/tony-mowbray-gives-sunderland-injury-update-and-drops-major-selection-hints-for-rotherham-trip-4033983) that he was suffering from a calf problem, which is what kept him out for the visit of the Robins.

### The Latest: Bennette set to return

Taking to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/scottwilsonecho/status/1627662679514001408?s=46&t=w8ngfnIgUIZys2BQ3OKwJg) on Monday, Wilson confirmed that Bennette is set to return for Sunderland and will be available for the trip to South Yorkshire. He wrote:

“Jewison Bennette will be back in #SAFC squad for tomorrow’s trip to Rotherham. Lynden Gooch and Niall Huggins both back training – but neither will be considered for the game at the New York Stadium…”

### The Verdict: Boost for Mowbray

Bennette is still adapting to first-team action, but having been [labelled](https://twitter.com/buntingfootball/status/1573292029538439168?s=46&t=xJItgA6pN3wH0Hcr1iqeiw) a ‘star boy’ by journalist [Josh Bunting](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball), Mowbray will be happy to have him back at his disposal.

The 18-year-old has recorded [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jewison-bennette/leistungsdaten/spieler/743627) assists and put [nine](https://fbref.com/en/players/58f5704e/Jewison-Bennette) crosses into the box when on the pitch this season, alongside averaging [2.10](https://fbref.com/en/players/58f5704e/Jewison-Bennette) shots per league game.

The Heredia native also provides the boss with versatility having [operated](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jewison-bennette/leistungsdaten/spieler/743627) on both the left and right side of the midfield as well as his natural position further forward this term.

Bennette is a hugely useful option to have introduced into the senior fold and him being recognised for his development is nothing less than he deserves.
