# Sunderland: Black Cats eyeing loan move for Joe Hugill

**[Sunderland](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/sunderland-afc-news/) are considering a loan move to sign Manchester United striker Joe Hugill this summer, according to journalist [Alan Nixon](https://twitter.com/reluctantnico).**

### The Lowdown: Hugill profiled

The Red Devils starlet began his career at the Stadium of Light having worked his way up through the academy ranks but [never](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hugill/transfers/spieler/726859) made a senior appearance in the [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/).

Erik Ten Hag isn’t likely to include the 19-year-old, who is currently out on a season-long [loan](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hugill/transfers/spieler/726859) at Altrincham, in his first-team plans next term, and it sounds like Tony Mowbray is looking to capitalise by bringing him back to the northeast.

### The Latest: Sunderland eyeing Hugill

According to Nixon (via [Football League World](https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/sunderland-plotting-striker-reunion-with-man-utd-transfer-agreement/)), United are ‘planning’ to send Hugill on another loan in 2023/24, with Sunderland ‘on alert’ to his availability.

The Black Cats’ attention has been ‘caught’ by this development and it’s reported that the boss will be ‘looking to boost’ his attacking ranks ahead of the new campaign.

### The Verdict: Potential advantage?

Hugill shares the same [agent](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hugill/profil/spieler/726859) as Anthony Patterson, Trai Hume [and](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/afc-sunderland/berateruebersicht/verein/289) Patrick Roberts, so this could potentially give Sunderland an advantage when trying to get a deal over the line.

The Durham-born talent has posted [50](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hugill/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/726859) goal contributions (44 goals and six assists) in 77 career appearances and knows what it takes to be successful having [lifted](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-hugill/erfolge/spieler/726859) the FA Youth Cup in 2022.

Standing at 6 foot 2, the striker would also provide an aerial threat and be the ideal target man with his height in the final third, much like Ross Stewart.

Hugill has been [labelled](https://twitter.com/buntingfootball/status/1327237580895752192?s=46&t=cVYwodEwJ5KqH22eIl4UYA) a ‘clinical’ finisher by journalist [Josh Bunting](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball) and it would be a massive coup for Mowbray should he be able to acquire his services.
