Both Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be tracking Benfica defender David Luiz. The 22-year-old Brazilian defender is a highly-rated prospect in Portugal and has been impressing in the Portuguese League this season with Benfica. Luiz is a central defender with good physical and technical ability and is likely to suit the style of play in La Liga. He has made 30 appearances for the side, having helped them to victory in the 2008-09 Portuguese Cup as well as having made several appearances for the Brazilian Under 20 national side.
Real are believed to be looking for a replacement for the injured Pepe, who is out for the remainder of the season and they believe Luiz to be the perfect target, given that it will also be a signing for the future. Luiz could suit Real in either a centre back, or left back role. The experienced Raul Albiol will provide a good partner for Luiz and he could replace the questionable Marcelo in the left full back position. Real seems a more realistic destination for the young Brazilian given Barcelona’s current squad condition. Pep Guardiola is unlikely to be looking to strengthen his defence after both his first team and blossoming youth academy have been excelling this season, however it is believed that Barcelona scouts were also very impressed by Luiz after viewing their on-loan striker Kerrison recently.
