Barcelona: Catalans remain interested in Marco Verratti

Barcelona have been handed a boost in their pursuit of long-term transfer target Marco Verratti.

According to reports in Spain (via Sports Mole), the Italian’s agent – Mino Raiola – has said that his client is looking for a fresh challenge away from the French capital, with a move to Barcelona thought to be of huge interest to him.

The 26-year-old has won six Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain since arriving at the club in 2012, but he is yet to taste European success with the French giants.

It is understood that Barca could acquire Verratti for around £52m, due to the Italian having just two years left on his current deal at the Parc des Princes (via Sports Mole).

Indeed, Barcelona could be in the market for a new central midfielder to replace the unsettled Ivan Rakitic. The Croatian is currently being linked with a move away from the club after falling out of favour in Catalonia this season.

Rakitic has started just one game for the Spanish champions all season, per Transfermarkt, with summer signing Frenkie de Jong and Arthur preferred in the middle of Barcelona’s midfield.

At just 26 years of age, Verratti still has years ahead of him at the very top level and would surely flourish playing alongside the likes of De Jong, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann in Spain.

Boasting a pass success rate of 92.2% last season (via WhoScored), the Italy international looks ready-made for a possession-hungry side like Barcelona.

The petit midfielder has been on Barca’s radar for years now; if they can cash-in on Rakitic in January and use the funds to pick up Verratti next summer, it would be viewed as a great move by the Catalan club.
