Barcelona: Club looking to sign Rodrigo Bentancur

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Marca) report that Barcelona are trying to strike a deal with Juventus for midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Having signed Dutch wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax for big money earlier this summer, alongside offering ex-Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey a reported £400,000-a-week contract, Juventus are looking to offload some key players before the European transfer window shuts on 2 September.

There have been rumours surrounding the likes of Blaise Matuidi, Sami Khedira and Paulo Dybala all summer long, though each have remained at the club so far, with only Moise Kean departing the club for Everton for €40m.

With the domestic campaign starting, the Old Lady are reportedly desperate to trim their squad and subsequent wage bill.

One player that could be heading for the exit door is Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. The 22-year-old is thought to be on Barcelona’s radar, with the Catalan club reportedly interested in obtaining the South American’s signature to bolster their midfield options.

Bentancur made 40 appearances in all competitions for Juve last term, scoring seven goals and providing three assists for the Italian titans. Indeed, his 87.2% passing accuracy last season may seem him fit in well at the Camp Nou, given their infamous style of play, and the player’s performance against Manchester United in the Champions League was praised by notable journalist, Jonathan Wilson.

‘The clever, tough Uruguayan who controlled Tuesday’s game from the back of midfield’, he wrote back in the Guardian back in October.

Given that Mundo Deportivo (via iNews) blamed the lack of control as part of the reason the Blaugrana capitulated against Liverpool back in May, perhaps Bentancur could help on that front after proving adept at that role against the Red Devils.

Bentancur certainly suits the club’s technical style of football and may bolster the holding midfield ranks playing alongside the likes of Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong in the heart of the Catalans midfield, and if they can capitalise on Juventus’ desperateness to offload some of their players in the coming weeks, may be able to get him for a decent cut-price.
