Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto has strained his medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will be ruled out until further notice, per the club’s official website.
Will Barcelona win La Liga this season?
Roberto started the Blaugrana’s clash against Eibar on Saturday afternoon – a game they won 3-0 thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez – but was substituted just after the break and replaced by Nelson Semedo due to the aforementioned injury.
A statement on Barcelona’s website reads: “Medical test on Saturday afternoon have revealed that Sergi Roberto has strained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee. His presence in future training sessions will depend on how the injury develops.”
It is a blow for manager Ernesto Valverde, who has been heavily reliant on the 27-year-old this term, starting him in eight of the club’s nine La Liga fixtures (via Transfermarkt).
Predominantly a central midfielder, Roberto has been used more as a right-back for Barca in recent outings, so the reigning champions will perhaps now look to Nelson Semedo to fill that position in his absence.
Here’s how Barca fans reacted to Roberto’s injury news on Twitter:
