Lionel Messi could miss Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga match against Osasuna this weekend, as he continues to struggle with his recovery from a calf injury, via the Daily Mail.
The Argentinian playmaker has missed Barcelona’s opening two league games against Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis, but there was hope he would return this weekend against Osasuna.
That now looks unlikely, with manager Ernesto Valverde saying after the win over Betis on Sunday that there “wasn’t a positive feeling” regarding Messi’s recovery, per Daily Mail’s report.
The Barca boss added: “We already said that we wouldn’t rush any player [and] what we wanted to avoid was a relapse.”
Messi sustained a calf injury whilst on international duty with Argentina at this summer’s Copa America and has been working tirelessly with the club’s physios to ensure he doesn’t miss too much La Liga action.
However, having missed Barcelona’s opening day defeat to Athletic Bilbao and subsequent 5-2 victory over Real Betis, he is facing the prospect of missing three league matches should he fail to return to fitness prior to Saturday’s trip to Osasuna.
The 32-year-old is obviously Barcelona’s key player and having him back to full fitness will serve as a huge boost for the Spanish champions, though risking him when he is not 100% could just make things worse and lead to further spells on the sidelines for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Last season, the Atomic Flea scored an astonishing 51 goals and provided 22 assists for Barcelona as he continues to hit new heights for the Spanish giants.
Barcelona have gotten off to an inconsistent start this time out and currently sit 9th in La Liga, so could really do with their talisman back to ensure they don’t lose sight of both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, who currently sit second and third respectively.
