Lionel Messi has been sidelined for Barcelona’s opening four league matches this season, after sustaining an injury to his calf during the summer.
However, the Catalans No.10 – who last season scored 51 goals and provided 22 assists – is expected to feature in some capacity this evening, as Barcelona travel to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League group stage opener, per BBC Sport.
It goes without saying how important the South American is to Barcelona, and should he start this evening it will change the whole dynamic of the game.
Manager Ernesto Valverde may feel as though featuring Messi from the beginning will be too premature considering he is only just returning from the sidelines, and could instead bring him off the bench in the latter stages of the tie.
The 32-year-old looked sharp as ever in recent training ground footage which has surfaced on Twitter, however, suggesting that he’s ready to make his first competitive start for the Catalans tonight.
Here’s how some very excited fans reacted on Twitter…

Messi looks super fit but apparently our defence is degrading! They are not learning from playing with the best forward in the world!
