In our Loan Watch feature series, the Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a selection of players from a particular club are faring whilst they are away from their parent side, and provide a brief update regarding their form.
Philippe Coutinho – Bayern Munich
The most high-profile Barcelona star currently out on loan is Philippe Coutinho, who is playing for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this season. The Brazilian started slowly in Germany but has now beginning to find the kind of form that earned him a mega-money move to Barcelona from Liverpool last year.
Coutinho has notched two goals and three assists so far for the Bavarian giants, with his latest contribution coming in the 7-2 humiliation of Tottenham in the Champions League last week, where he chipped in with an assist at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
WhoScored have given the South American an overall rating of 7.53/10 for his performances for Bayern so far; telling signs that he is progressing well for the Bundesliga titans, who currently sit third in the league as things stand.
Juan Miranda – Schalke
Barcelona will be far from impressed with the lack of game-time 19-year-old left-back Juan Miranda is currently receiving whilst on loan at Schalke.
The young defender is yet to play a single minute of football for the Bundesliga side since arriving at the end of August. Miranda has been an unused substitute for Schalke in their previous four games, though it is perhaps understandable to see why considering the team are unbeaten in those four matches; winning three and drawing once.
Hopefully, the teenager will start to see an increase in game-time after the international break, with a DFB Cup clash against second division outfit Arminia at the end of October seemingly a perfect opportunity for manager David Wagner to hand him his first-team debut.
Marc Cucurella – Getafe
Another of Barcelona’s left-backs currently out on loan is Marc Cucurella, who is spending time with fellow La Liga side Getafe this term.
The 21-year-old has registered three assists for his temporary employers so far, and is being given plenty of opportunities – playing a total of 719 minutes (per Transfermarkt) for the club in La Liga since joining from Barcelona at the start of the campaign.
Philippe Coutinho is starting to show his class in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich; if he continues to push on, perhaps there could well still be a future for him at the Nou Camp when he returns, depending on how the club fare this season.
In the case of Marc Cucurella, obtaining regular game-time will be hugely beneficial for his development as a player in La Liga – the division in which he will have high hopes of playing in with his parent club in the future.
Little can be said about Miranda, considering the 19-year-old’s lack of playing time, though hopefully soon things will start to change for him in Germany after the international break.
