Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman has a clause in his contract which allows him to join Barcelona, according to Marca.
The former Barcelona defender has been managing his national side since last February after he was sacked by Everton and has massively improved the team. They are currently on the brink of qualifying for Euro 2020 having won five of their six qualifying matches ahead of next summer’s competition (via Soccerway).
The Oranje currently top Group C ahead of Germany and look a completely transformed side under Koeman’s guidance – just 16 months after they missed out on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Koeman is said to have always held a special place in his heart for Barcelona – the club he played for between the years of 1989-1995 – and it has now been made possible for him to manage them in the future, should they want him.
The news was confirmed by Dutch FA director Nico-Jan Hoogma, who said Barcelona were the only side capable of freeing Koeman from his contract – which runs until 2022.
“Agreements were reached on this matter but [Barcelona] would have to pay for it,” Hoogma told Fox Sports. “Ronald has always indicated that he wants to be a coach in Barcelona one day. We’ll see what will happen.”
Ronald Koeman managing Barcelona seems like the perfect fit. Not only does the Dutchman know the club and their philosophy inside out from his playing days and time spent there as an assistant manager between 1998-2000, but he is also loved by the club and is a proven manager at the very top level.
Koeman’s career at Everton never really got going, but his work previously with Southampton and current stint with the Netherlands national team proves that he still has what it takes to be a fantastic manager of a huge club.
