Former Barcelona man Gary Lineker has given his verdict on Lionel Messi after the Camp Nou great put in another stunning performance for the Catalan club.
In their prime, who was better?
Messi was front and centre as Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 5-1 in La Liga last night with the Argentina international scoring two and assisting a further two.
One of those goals proved to a superb free-kick, whipped into the top-right hand corner from more than 20-yards away.
Lineker said that the 32-year-old sees and carries out passes like no one else can, as he also issued a sarcastic comment on the magician’s goal scoring record (via Gary Lineker)
Everyone already knows that Messi has an astonishing goal-scoring record since he made his debut for the Catalan club back in 2004. The attacker has scored 25+ goals in every Spanish league season since the beginning of the 2009/2010 campaign, highlighting his ridiculous level of consistency (via WhoScored).
However, its often the creative aspect of his game which gets pushed aside behind his goalscoring feats. Messi has managed to assist 10+ goals in every league season bar one since the 2009/2010 season, showing he is probably one of the greatest creators in modern history.
He also tops the list for most assists for the Catalan club, which features the likes of Xavi Hernadez, Iniesta and Dani Alves, showing how his creative ability is head and shoulders above anyone else (via Statbunker).
What proves even more magnificent is his ability to play key passes. For Barcelona, the Argentine man has provided the most keys passes in four of the last six seasons since the 2013/2014 campaign, further showing his creative ability.
Messi’s ability to create remains a reasonably underrated part of his game when compared to his stunning goal record. Indeed, Lineker is right in his assumption that no one sees or carries out a pass like Messi, who has shown he is one of the greatest creative players to have played the beautiful game.
