Barcelona: Lionel Messi urges club to get rid of three players

According to reports in Spain courtesy of Don Balon (via Fox Sports), Lionel Messi wants the club to get rid of three players, as he does not feel they are good enough.

Ousmane Dembele, Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto are all thought to be unwanted by the Catalans’ No.10, who holds them largely to blame for the club’s shock 3-1 defeat to Levante on Saturday.

Messi originally gave Barca the lead with a first-half penalty before the visitors completely unravelled and conceded three goals.

Their position at the top of La Liga now remains hanging only by a thread following Real Madrid’s goalless draw against Real Betis on Saturday evening, while the Spaniards have also been far from convincing in the Champions League this season.

The Blaugrana only just edged past Slavia Prague in the Champions League a fortnight ago, beating the Czech outfit 2-1, though the manner in which they won and their overall performance left plenty of room for improvement.

Don Balon also report that Messi wants Barca to win the Champions League this season at all costs following their semi-final collapse last term, but that he will never be able to realise that dream with the current squad at the Camp Nou.

Dembele has often caused headaches to manager Ernesto Valverde and co. with his disciplinary issues – which included being sent off last month for dissent – while Roberto and Semedo have suffered from a serious dip in form over the past few months.

There is no argument against Barcelona being poor this season. Even towards the back-end of last season they suffered a huge dip in form, bowing out of Europe in such poor circumstances before losing the Copa del Rey final to Valencia.

This season they are lucky to find both Real and Atletico Madrid in equally poor and inconsistent form, but if they do not buck their ideas up soon then there is no chance of them going the distance in Europe and little chance of them retaining the domestic title, either.

Messi has every right to be annoyed at the lack of quality being produced from some of his teammates. The Argentine is constantly bailing them out by scoring stunning goals in the final third, only to be let down by the attitude and performances of his colleagues elsewhere on the pitch.
