In this instalment of our Transfer Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Barcelona recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
Ousmane Dembele a target for Manchester United
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Ousmane Dembele in January to solve their goal crisis, according to the Independent.
The Red Devils have found the net just eight times this term – 16 times less than Manchester City – and have only 17-year-old striker Mason Greenwood available to them at this moment in time, as Anthony Martial continues to recover from injury.
Marus Rashford is now sidelined with a groin injury sustained against West Ham at the weekend, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer extremely thin on the ground up-front.
Dembele hasn’t really clicked with Barcelona since arriving at the club in 2017. He reportedly became unsettled with the club when they tried to include him in a potential deal with PSG for Neymar in the summer, so a move away from Catalonia could perhaps be what he needs.
Barcelona are expected to once again go after their former man, Neymar, next summer and should they finally land him after coming so close this year, it would almost certainly signal the end for the Frenchman at the Camp Nou. At United he would be the main man, at Barcelona – he’s not even close.
Ivan Rakitic eyed by Bayern Munich
Ivan Rakitic looks to have become surplus to requirements at Barcelona after the arrival of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax this summer. The Croatian has started just one match this term, with it now looking that he could depart the club next year due to a lack of game-time in La Liga.
Rakitic has a wealth of experience having played for Barcelona in the biggest occasions throughout the previous five seasons, so would certainly add quality to Bayern’s midfield.
It is clear that the Croatian’s time at Barcelona is now coming to an end – highlighted by his lack of playing time this term – so a change of scenery is needed to salvage his career.
Still only 31, Rakitic could have a good few years left in him if he can remain injury-free but De Jong’s arrival does appear to have limited his involvement at the Camp Nou.
Arsenal chase Samuel Umtiti
The Frenchman is yet to feature for the Blaugrana this term; he was an unused substitute for the club’s opening three games and has been sidelined with yet another injury – this time to his foot – for the Catalans last three matches (per Transfermarkt).
The 25-year-old looks set for a move away from the Camp Nou, with Arsenal allegedly keen on bringing him in in January as they look to reassure a back-line that has only managed to keep one clean sheet in the Premier League this time out.
With Clément Lenglet and Gerard Pique the very much established centre-back pairing at the Camp Nou this season, it leaves Umtiti’s position at the Spanish club a little up in the air. With that in mind, it would perhaps be unsurprising to see him depart the club for a fresh venture, sooner rather than later.
