Cristiano Ronaldo is regarded by most as the 2nd best player in the world only behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in most peoples eyes, although ahead of the Barca ace in others.
We all know Ronaldo is not the most popular player in the world but you know a great player when even the people who don’t like him rate him as the 2nd best (at least) in the world!
We all know that with success more often than not comes arrogance and a complete example of this is the ridiculous comments by Barcelona president Sandro Rosell
Rosell’s comments, reported in The Sun, stated:
“Cristiano Ronaldo is not the second best player in the world, he is the 12th. The first 11 are the Barcelona players.
Outside Spain everyone is clear that Messi should win the Ballon d’Or.”
He also implied Ronaldo would only make the substitutes bench at the Catalan giants!
These comments don’t only suggest complete stupidity and lack of football knowledge from a person held high in the football hierachy but also complete and utter arrogance either from just him or Barcelona as a club.
Lionel Messi is the only player who can be considered better than Ronaldo and possibly Xavi and Iniesta considered as good as the Portugal ace.
Players such as Pique, Sanchez, Pedro etc. are top quality players but can not hold a torch to Ronaldo. These comments make no sense and I see no plausible reason behind them because he can’t honestly believe these statements can he?
If he thinks Barcelona’s starting 11 consists of the top 11 players in the world then how come they only won the Copa Del Rey last season?
I respect Barcelona for their style of play, the way they have revolutionised the game and most of all their youth system but I feel an air of arrogance is starting to creep over the Nou Camp. Feeling they can beat top teams by playing 6 midfield players and no recognised centre forward shows this because if Messi has a blip then Barca may just be shown up much like Spain are being at the moment in Euro 2012 because they don’t have the Argentine genius.
