IMScouting is reporting that Real Madrid will make a January swoop for Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen to make up for the loss of Portugal defender Pepe to injury. Real have good relations with Ajax and raided them not too long ago for striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and midfielder Wesley Sneijder both of whom enjoyed a measure of success in the Spanish capital. 22-year-old Vertonghen is now the latest Ajax star to be linked to a move to the Spanish giants as the list of potential replacements for Pepe grows.
Despite his relatively young age Vertonghen is already regarded pretty highly among football fans after putting in a number of stellar performances for Ajax and also impressing for his country, having already made 20 international appearances. If Real have any doubts over signing a Belgian, who are not known for producing top class players, then they need only look to Arsenal whose Thomas Vermaelen is a Belgian defender who played for Ajax previously. Vermaelen’s success could well help Real make a decision to move for Vertonghen who’s a big player with good aerial presence and also offers versatility – being able to play anywhere along the back four.
The talk in Madrid has been that Real will look to sign a full back rather than a centre back and shift Sergio Ramos inside to centre back but the right back is against the idea and Real manager Manuel Pellegrini has not identified many full backs he likes the idea of signing. Centre backs are now being mooted for and Vertonghen has quickly caught the eye, sufficiently impressing Real scouts.
[Is there any substance to this and should this rumour Fly or Die?]
