Real Madrid have been handed a huge injury boost after summer signing Ferland Mendy was able to participate in a training session held behind closed doors, via Marca.
Mendy, who joined Los Blancos for £47m from Lyon earlier this summer, had been sidelined with a thigh complaint which saw him miss the majority of pre-season with his new side.
However, the France international has now trained with Real and is expected to be included in manager Zinedine Zidane’s matchday squad for the visit of Real Valladolid this weekend.
The private session, which took place at Madrid’s training complex in Valdebebas at 18:00hrs on Monday evening, also saw two players from the club’s Real Madrid Castilla (B team) – Diego Altube and Fran Garcia – train with the first-team.
Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, Mariano Diaz and Rodrygo Goes were all notable absentees, however, as they each continued their recoveries from injury.
Zidane’s new look Los Blancos got off to a flier last weekend with a comfortable 3-1 win over Celta Vigo away from home.
Goals from Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez helped earn Madrid their first three points of the new campaign, though the victory was bittersweet as Luka Modric was dismissed early in the second-half for an alleged stamp on Celta’s Denis Suarez.
While ousting Marcelo as the club’s first-choice left-back right away may prove rather difficult for the Frenchman, having him back will only strengthen the squad going forward. Indeed, having a more defensive option for that particular berth (Mendy averaged more blocks, interceptions and was dribbled past fewer times than Marcelo last season) may help Los Blancos.
They conceded 10 more goals than Barcelona last season, as well as 17 more than Atletico Madrid, so shoring up the defence could help over the course of a league season.
