Paul Pogba’s move to Real Madrid dominated transfer speculation throughout the summer, with Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane having been keen on bringing the French midfielder to the Bernabeu.
In the end, though, the France international remained a United player and will do so until January at least, when the rumour mill could once again heavily feature Pogba and Madrid.
With a fresh transfer budget to work with, Real could well finally land their man by next summer and Pogba could well find himself playing La Liga football. That is of course if president Florentino Perez is willing to part with the rumoured £150m attached to the midfielder.
The Independent report that one of the main reasons Pogba’s move to Spain failed this summer is because Perez did not feel that he was worth United’s £150m asking price, and considering they had already spent over £200m on the likes of Eden Hazard, Rodrygo, Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy, you can perhaps understand why.
Zinedine Zidane’s slightly one dimensional pursuit of Pogba may have clouded his ability to think practically about other options in the case of not landing the Red Devils midfielder.
Tenuous links with Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen and Ajax’s Donny van de Beek were also rife throughout the summer, but again a move never came to fruition, seemingly because Zidane wanted Pogba and Pogba only.
Los Blancos now face the prospect of going through the whole season with just four centre midfielders (Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Casemiro & Valverde), making another dogged pursuit of Pogba seem probable in ten months’ time. If Perez is on board this time, of course.
