Real Madrid are set to challenge Barcelona for the signature of PSG forward Neymar, according to Sky Sports.
Reports in Spain have suggested that Real president Florentino Perez in keen on signing the Brazilian forward, while Barcelona have ambitions of re-signing Neymar to reunite MSN (Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar). However, given Real’s recent purchase of Eden Hazard, the signing of the 27-year-old is unlikely, but not impossible.
Neymar has failed to make an appearance in the first week of PSG’S pre-season training camp and was spotted playing Footvolley on a Beach in Brazil, which suggests his time in the France capital could be coming to a premature end. The Brazil forward signed for PSG in a world-record deal worth £200m, netting 34 times and registering 21 assists in 37 Ligue 1 appearances during his two-year tenure at the club thus far.
Bookmakers have shortened the odds for Neymar to move to Real Madrid, but remains a firm 2/7 favourite to join Barcelona and you can find the best football betting offers here to stick a bet on this today. It is claimed PSG officials have a better working relationship with Real Madrid than Barcelona, which could sway your decision when placing your bet on where he will go. No formal offers have been made yet, but there is still plenty of time left in this summer transfer window.
PSG’s sporting director Leonardo has confirmed Barcelona’s interest but suggested they may struggle financially to complete the deal. He said: “We have not seen that Barcelona are truly in a position to buy him. A move of this magnitude is not just a question of emotions. It is a financial question.”
Although the deal would set Barcelona back some serious bucks, they could be tempted to involve players as a part of their deal. It is being reported that the club are willing to let Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti depart this summer, and any of these players could reduce the fee required to sign Neymar. The recent acquisition of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid was a statement of intent from Barcelona, and they don’t appear to be applying the brakes just yet.
Real Madrid have been busy operators this summer, splashing close to £300m on Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo and Hazard. Zinedine Zidane’s return has given the Real supporters a renewed sense of optimism of challenging for the La Liga title once again, while competing in the Champions League, a trophy he won three years in a row in his previous stint as manager.
Neymar has failed to settle in Paris, and injuries coupled with a lower quality of football has diminished the reputation and growth of the 27-year-old. He was once touted as the next player to win the Ballon d’Or after Lionel Messi and originally moved to PSG to make a name for himself. However, these plans haven’t exactly worked out, and should he move back to Barcelona, it could revive his career.
Following Neymar’s departure from Barcelona back in 2017, the Catalonian outfit have failed to replace his quality with both Coutinho and Dembele failing to impress the Barca fans. Two semi-final embarrassing knockouts in the past two seasons has irritated the fan base and they are desperate to lift the Champions League trophy once again and signing Neymar could provide the spark they need.
As for Real Madrid, Zidane will be ecstatic with the signings he has already made, and they have the potential to be one of the most dominant teams in Europe next season. Bringing Neymar to the Bernabeu would bolster their chances of silverware, not just domestically, but in European competitions, also.
