Real Madrid’s injury crisis continues to worsen, with the news that midfielder James Rodriguez could be ruled out for up to three weeks with a calf complaint, via the Evening Standard.
Rodriguez, who this weekend made his first appearance since 2017 for Los Blancos after a two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich, picked up the injury in the second-half of Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Valladolid on Saturday.
The 28-year-old was withdrawn from action and replaced by Vinicius Junior on the 57th minute at the Bernabeu, with manager Zinedine Zidane initially believing that the Colombian had picked up a slight knock to his calf.
However, it has now been revealed via Madrid’s website that he has in fact sustained a muscle injury to the right soleus and could be ruled out of action for up to three weeks (via Evening Standard).
“After the tests carried out today on our player James Rodriguez by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the right soleus,” the club said on their website on Monday.
“His recovery will continue to be assessed,” they added.
Rodriguez is expected to miss Real’s upcoming clash against Villarreal this Sunday, but could return to the fold for the visit of Levante on September 14th thanks to a timely international break next weekend. Indeed, this can be considered a blow despite James’ relatively low standing the squad (Zidane reportedly wanted him out, per Goal) considering Eden Hazard is also injured.
The Colombian did prove to be an effective attacking outlet for Los Blancos during his one game this season, contributing 4 shots and 2 key passes in 57 minutes, so can clearly make an impact within their side.
Los Blancos are already missing Eden Hazard, Rodrygo Goes, Brahim Diaz and Marco Asensio through injury, with the latter expected to be absent for the majority of the campaign as he recovers from a ruptured ACL sustained in pre-season.
Given the impact he can clearly make on the attacking front, not having such a threat only adds to the problems.
