Real Madrid are looking to reward Karim Benzema with a new £190,000 per week contract after an impressive start to the season for the Frenchman, according to El Chiringuito TV.
Benzema already has six league goals this season with the club sitting pretty at the top of La Liga.
His form comes after the purchase of Luka Jovic, who joined the club for £62m from German club Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer. The young Serbian has yet to find the net for the Spanish side since his move from Germany.
The move to give Benzema a new contract looks to be a justified one from the Spanish side. Luka Jovic showed last season he has the talent, but he is just 21-years-old and hasn’t got the experience or ability the French striker has.
The France international finished with the most goals, 21, and averaged the most shots per game, 2.9, in La Liga for Real Madrid last season (via WhoScored). His tally of 21 left him 13 clear of the next highest scorer showing the over-reliance on the French striker, who more often than not carried the attacking hope of the team. Meanwhile, Jovic scored 17 goals for Frankfurt and was supported by former teammate Sebastien Haller, who also grabbed 15 goals.
Benzema also has a wealth of experience in the Champions League, scoring 60 goals in 114 appearances whilst winning the competition four times (via Transfermarkt). Jovic doesn’t have nearly the level of experience, having made just two Champions League appearances in his career.
Benzema has shown he has the firepower to carry the hopes of Real Madrid with his performances last season, justifying his new contract. With Jovic only being 21-years-old, he has time to develop and take over from Benzema, who turns 32 in December.
