After much speculation, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper of five years, Keylor Navas, has left the Bernabeu for Paris Saint-Germain.
On Monday night, Madrid’s official website confirmed the Costa Rican’s departure from the club.
“The club wishes to express its gratitude and affection for the player’s conduct and commitment throughout his five seasons at Real Madrid,” read an official statement.
It continued: “Navas was a part of one of the most significant spells of our history, during which time he lifted 12 pieces of silverware, including three Champions League crowns.
“Real Madrid wish the player all the best in this latest chapter of his career.”
Navas initially joined Los Blancos as a backup to former stalwart Iker Casillas, but was made Real’s first-choice keeper after the Spain legend departed the club for Porto in 2015.
However, after the arrival of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last summer, Navas started to see game-time at the Bernabeu limited. He made just 10 La Liga appearances for the Spanish titans last term, clearly indicating that his time in Madrid was coming to an end.
The former Levante shot-stopper – who has penned four-year deal with the French champions – is expected to be Thomas Tuchel’s No.1 at the Parc des Princes following the departure of both Gianluigi Buffon and Kevin Trapp this summer. Buffon rejoined his former side Juventus, while Trapp made the switch to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Madrid have received goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in return for Navas, who joins the Spaniards on a season-long loan, presumably as backup for Courtois.
This move is exactly what Navas needs to resurrect his career. At Madrid he became merely a second choice to Thibaut Courtois, but in France he’ll have the opportunity to become PSG’s main man between the sticks, as they try to win their first ever Champions League trophy this season – something Navas has already achieved three times with Madrid.
