Real Madrid: Luka Jovic highlights struggles in Spain

Luka Jovic said he is ready to ‘answer the call’ at Real Madrid following a slow start to life in the Spanish capital, via Goal.

The Serbian marksman, who joined Los Blancos from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported £62m this summer, is yet to open his account for the La Liga titans in his first three appearances for the club.

He did manage an assist in Madrid’s last match against Villarreal on Sunday, though, so will hope to build on that when he returns from international duty.

Asked about his start to the season with Real, the 21-year-old told reporters that his transition has been tricky, but that he is ready to step up when called upon.

“After the pre-season, of course it’s getting better now,” said the forward, who scored 27 goals last season.

“I was injured, it was that red card when I had to come off against Arsenal [in the first half of the International Champions Cup clash after Nacho Fernandez was sent off].

“It’s not easy for one young player, but I think I handled it in the best way possible and I’m ready to answer the biggest demands.”

For now, though, Jovic is focused on performing for his country, as they face Portugal and Luxembourg as part of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign this week.

Jovic will face Cristiano Ronaldo against Portugal, but knows that there is more than just the Juventus forward to contend with when it comes to the Euro 2016 champions.

“As far as I know, we play 11 on 11, we don’t just play against Ronaldo,” he said. “We will prepare for the whole team, not just Ronaldo.

“He is certainly their best individual, but they have many more interesting players who can make a problem. It will be necessary to be concentrated and disciplined as much as possible to achieve a positive result.”

It is still early days for Jovic at Madrid. He hasn’t got off to the best of starts – not helped by injuries in pre-season – but hopefully for him, the assist he registered last weekend will act as a confidence boost.

If the 21-year-old can get off the mark against Levante on 14 September, it could help him start to regularly find the net and rediscover the form which earned him a move to the Bernabeu in the first place.
