Real Madrid’s move for Christian Eriksen looks all but over, as the 27-year-old has flown to Spain for international duty, via Evening Standard.
The Tottenham playmaker has been rumoured to be leaving north London all summer, with Madrid the main club reportedly interested in signing him before tonight’s deadline. However, after no deal has been struck between the two clubs for the ex-Ajax star, it looks almost a certainty that he’ll remain at Spurs until next summer at least.
Eriksen has entered the final year of his contract and said at the start of the summer that he would like to “try something new”, but also admitted that he could stay at Tottenham if the right club does not emerge.
Manchester United were keen on bringing the Denmark international to Old Trafford, but it is understood that Eriksen rejected an approach from the Red Devils due to his burning desire to play in La Liga with either Barcelona or Real Madrid, per Evening Standard.
Neither of those Spanish heavyweights have come in for him, though, with the latter making it clear that they want Paul Pogba before anyone else – a move Los Blancos will now have to wait until next year to try and complete once again.
Eriksen has today flown to Spain to train with Denmark ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifier against Gibraltar on Thursday, making an eleventh-hour move to Madrid seemingly impossible to complete.
Should everything go as anticipated tonight, and Eriksen does remain a Spurs player until the end of his current contract next summer, Tottenham will breathe a massive sigh of relief.
The Dane’s importance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side is too great to overlook this season – proven after his goal against Arsenal on Sunday – and, while they may lose out from a financial standpoint if he does leave the club for nothing next summer, they will be thankful that he is there to lend a helping hand this season, that’s for sure.
