Real Madrid have captured the signature of Alphonse Areola from PSG on a season-long loan, via Marca.
The France international joins Los Blancos as part of a swap deal which sees Keylor Navas move in the opposite direction, though the Costa Rican’s move to Paris is permanent and not a loan.
The 26-year-old is no stranger to La Liga, having turned out 37 times for Villarreal throughout the 2015-16 campaign. During his spell in Spain, Areola conceded just 32 goals, which earned him a recall to PSG.
Unfortunately for the former SC Bastia man, though, he has been unable to hold down the No.1 spot at the Parc des Princes.
Having reportedly spoken with Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane, per Marca, Areola was keen on a switch to Madrid, though understands that game-time will be equally as difficult to achieve at the Bernabeu, with Thibaut Courtois seemingly the nailed on first-choice shot-stopper at the Spanish club.
Real have endured a fairly poor start to their domestic campaign this term, winning only one of their opening three games. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of those matches, too, which could suggest that a change of goalkeeper may be required should Courtois’ poor form, something discussed a lot in Spain last term, continue.
All Areola can do is work hard in Spain and bide his time. It’s likely that he’ll get opportunities in the first-team during the club’s less prioritised Copa del Rey matches, and when that happens he can then start to stake a real claim to be included in Zidane’s starting-eleven in the league and Europe.
