Real Madrid: Club accelerated Luka Jovic deal after Barcelona scouted Serbian striker

Real Madrid ramped up a deal to sign Luka Jovic after it emerged that Barcelona were scouting the player during the 2018/2019 season, according to Bleacher Report.

After finding out their fiercest rivals were also scouting the Serbia international, the landscape changed and Real accelerated a deal for the 22-year-old.

The deal eventually closed for a fee believed to be an initial €65m (roughly £56m) on a mammoth six-year deal from the Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer transfer window (via The Guardian).

Jovic has featured in just nine games in all competitions, completing 90 minutes in just one of those fixtures (via Transfermarkt). Indeed, it seems strange that the club would accelerate a deal for the striker, and yet the manager rarely uses him in the starting lineups.

Jovic has started in three of his nine appearances, showing a lack of trust in his ability. What makes the lack of starts for him even stranger is the struggle of Zidane’s side to score goals, with only Karim Benzema having scored more than 2 goals in all competitions this season (via WhoScored).

In the current state of play, spending over £55m on Jovic is a waste of money that could’ve been spent on solidifying the centre of midfield.

The Spanish giants spent almost entire summer window chasing Paul Pogba, however, couldn’t secure his services and even had a bid rejected, according to The Telegraph. More reports emerged from the British publication that Manchester United were convinced that the Spanish side didn’t have enough money to sign Pogba, showing how bad of a purchase Jovic looks as of right now.

The situation at the Bernabeu is a strange one. Why chase a player that the manager won’t use on a regular basis? Real Madrid’s pursuit and eventual signing of Jovic looks to be a huge waste of money in its current state. Frankly, the club were better off holding out until next summer when they could use the funds to complete a deal for Pogba, who they are reportedly interested in.
