This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at a player who has disappointed since being signed, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to illustrate how ill-judged the transfer decision has been.
Real Madrid have had some huge names at the club throughout their highly-decorated existence, however one name that may not have been as big (literally) as Klass-Jan Huntelaar.
Indeed, the Dutch forward was signed by the Spanish giants in December 2008 ahead of the January 2009 transfer window for a fee thought to have been worth around €27m (£23.3m in the current conversion) after being an impressive force for Ajax – the club he coincidently finds himself playing for today.
A Holland international, the striker was understood to have been brought to Los Blancos as a replacement for fellow compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy (per Bleacher Report), although things went far from smoothly for him.
Having bagged 105 games in his 136 appearances prior to his switch (he has 147 in 224 now), there would have been plenty of expectation that he would be able to produce some of those quality figures in La Liga. However, he managed just eight goals in 20 appearances for Real Madrid before they decided to cut their losses on him.
Once the summer transfer window came around, Huntelaar was on his way to AC Milan for a cut-price fee of £12.8m (€15m) as they deemed him surplus to requirements following the arrivals of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka – which is probably understandable looking back on things.
An article by Goal suggested the resignation of Club President Ramon Calderon, which was followed by the appointment of Florentino Perez and his omission from the Champions League squad were, perhaps, the reasons as to why his time in Madrid was cut short despite a reasonable record.
However, to lose almost 50% of their money on him in just six months was ridiculous and, therefore, makes Huntelaar a ‘total dud’ for Real Madrid.
