Charlton Athletic: Lee Bowyer talks up Erhun Oztumer

Charlton Athletic have signed former Bolton Wanderers player Erhun Oztumer on a free transfer after he was released this week.

Championship Picks

The 28-year-old left the cash-strapped club on Friday after the attacking midfielder was granted a release from his contract.

Greenwich-born Oztumer has previous at The Valley – he was a youth player at the club before getting released for being too small (London News Online).

The Turkish midfielder rejoined the club less than 24 hours after the confirmation of his dismissal from Bolton.

According to Charlton’s website, as Oztumer had requested a free transfer before the deadline, he is now able to play for the Addicks immediately.

Oztumer also shared his delight with the club website.

“It feels great. It’s nice to see a few faces I haven’t seen in a while,” he said.

“I’m very happy to be here and looking forward to enjoying football again.

“I’m a local lad and I’ve kept an eye on Charlton since I left, so I’m happy to be happy to be here, playing in the Championship. The team has started really well so I’ll fight for my place, work hard and see where it takes us.”

Oztumer looks like another smart signing by the Addicks. Ultimately, they have brought in a skilful player, something Head of Recruitment Steve Gallen has touched on.

With Jonny Williams and Connor Gallagher arguably their most recognisable attacking midfielders, it was an area that needed bolstering. And Oztumer should be able to provide another threat for the Addicks.

Gallagher is only 19 and Williams has tended to play deeper or on the flank more recently, so he helps fill a few gaps for sure.

Manager Lee Bowyer confirmed this need for added flair to the squad in an interview with the club website after his signing.

He said: “It’s a bonus one for us. He’s a very good player, he scores goals, gets assists, he’s a local lad.

“Obviously we tried to bring him in during January but it didn’t work out for us.

“He brings a bit of flair and that craft and cleverness in the final third. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

There can’t be much damage done from adding a player such as Oztumer.

Oztumer will certainly add some technical skill to this Charlton team and is definitely another source for goals and assists, which can only be a good thing for the South London club.

They have had a great start to life in the Championship and this could be another lift to the side to help them complete their goal of staying there.
