Championship outfit Leeds United are likely to be interested in Billy Gilmour if he is made available for loan in January, according to London Football News.
The report also suggests that the Whites could face competition for the Chelsea youngster’s signature.
Gilmour signed for Chelsea from Rangers in 2017, and in his first two seasons at the club, he has been played in their youth teams (via Transfermarkt).
London Football News reports that both Leeds and Nottingham Forest have been keeping an eye on the development squad at Chelsea, and both have identified the midfielder as someone who has impressed and could be a potential target.
Whilst Gilmour did make his Premier League debut for the club as a substitute against Sheffield United (per Transfermarkt), he has otherwise failed to break into the first team and recently admitted that he needs more minutes.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, the 18-year-old said: “I need to play more first-team games, at Chelsea or maybe out on loan.”
Should he get his wish for more first-team action, then that could pave the way for either Leeds or Forest to secure his signature on a temporary basis in the January transfer window.
At this point in his career, a loan move would probably make sense for the Scotsman. He is still young and learning his trade, and would almost definitely benefit from being exposed to more first-team football.
Whilst Frank Lampard did give him his Premier League debut and start him in their EFL Cup win against Grimsby (per Transfermarkt), it is difficult to see him breaking into the starting 11 this season at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are well stacked in midfield and the likes of Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley are all ahead of him in the pecking order, whilst they also have Ruben Loftus-Cheek to come back from injury.
Moving to Leeds and working under a coach as well-respected as Marcelo Bielsa could be an excellent move for Gilmour.
However, the Whites do already have six loanees on their books (per Transfermarkt), and with only five allowed in the matchday squad, it could be a concern that there would be a chance he wouldn’t be guaranteed a place in the 18.
