Leeds United could be set for a fight to keep hold of star midfielder Kalvin Phillips, with Manchester United the latest club to be linked with a move.
The Leeds-born midfielder has developed into the key cog at the base of Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield and has been one of the most consistent performers for the club in the last 18 months.
However, according to a report from the Sun, Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan has made personal checks on Phillips this season as the Old Trafford club continue to look to young, hungry players for their squad.
Phillips signed a new deal with Leeds only a few months ago but that will not put off United, who have limitless funds and can offer Phillips the chance to play at the very top level of English football.
The midfielder was linked with a mega-money move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer but stayed at Elland Road to help lead a second charge under Marcelo Bielsa at Championship promotion.
He scored the winning goal just last week against Birmingham City as the club celebrated its 100-year anniversary.
This is one of those pieces of news that would instantly put the jitters up me if I were a Leeds fan.
Phillips obviously loves Leeds, but how many times do one of the biggest clubs in world football come knocking on the door?
If United do make a move and do put up the money, it’s hard to see the midfielder saying no. On a Leeds perspective, they should fight tooth and nail to keep him for this season at least as they eye promotion.
