Leeds United: Pontus Jansson admits he didn’t see Marcelo Bielsa when Brentford came to Elland Road

Pontus Jansson has revealed that he did not meet with Marcelo Bielsa when he came face-to-face with Leeds United for the first time following his move to Brentford.

The two sides came up against each other last month in the Championship at Elland Road, with the hosts coming out as 1-0 victors.

Now on international duty for Sweden, the defender has been asked about his time at the Yorkshire outfit, to which he revealed he did not meet with Bielsa, although it was not because he did not want to.

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, Jansson said: “I greeted everyone except Bielsa…Not because I didn’t want to and I don’t think it was because he didn’t want to, it just became so.”

There will have been some disappointment around Elland Road when Jansson’s move happened, however it would appear as though Leeds have been able to deal perfectly well without the Swede in the side.

Both Liam Cooper and Ben White have been stalwarts for the defence this season and have both been extremely solid for the Whites over the course of the current campaign.

Having conceded just three goals this season so far (BBC Sport), the data collected by WhoScored shows just how good the duo have been.

Skipper Cooper, who has recently been called up to the Scotland National side, has achieved an average of one tackle, 1.6 interceptions and four clearances in his five appearances, whereas White has 2.5 tackles, 4.2 interceptions and 3.7 clearances every 90 minutes he plays.

In comparison, Jansson has managed to achieve 1.8 tackles, 2.7 interceptions and four clearances for Brentford in his six matches as he looks to make Griffin Park his new home.

There were reports that Bielsa and Jansson had fallen out prior to his move (Football Insider), so it would be easy to suggest that two were avoiding each other going based on those claims.

However, the Swede appears to have dispelled those initial thoughts by inferring that they simply did not cross paths at Elland Road when the two sides came up against each other.

Either way, Leeds will be more focused on their Championship campaign and not on how a relationship between their coach and a previous defender is.
