Whilst on international duty with Northern Ireland, it appears Leeds United’s Stuart Dallas has suggested that Marcelo Bielsa has transformed his game.
Naturally a winger, the 28-year-old has found himself playing as a right-back for the Whites in their current campaign and it has been tipped by The Irish Examiner that he would feature for his country in that position as well.
After being asked the question, Dallas responded: “That’s where I’ve been transformed to. I’m a full-back now or a wing-back. I probably would. I think the game is changing. As a winger, it has changed for me and I feel more comfortable now as a full-back or wing-back.
“At the end of last season, I was playing on the left in the play-offs as a left-back because we had a few injuries, but I’ve moved over to the right now. I’m just happy to be playing, to be honest.”
Dallas appears to have become a mainstay of Bielsa’s side this season, although that may be due to the fact that Luke Ayling is still trying to make a return from the ankle injury he sustained whilst on pre-season.
The Northern Irishman has made six Championship appearances for Leeds so far, with five of those coming in the right-back position (WhoScored).
Indeed, he looks to have made the position his own as well, as he has managed to average 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and two clearances per game and earned recognition for his performance in their defeat against Swansea City last weekend.
Both Through It All and the Yorkshire Evening Post were encouraged with his contribution on the pitch for Bielsa’s side, as he tried to supply the Whites’ attacking players with his deliveries from out wide.
Valued at £1.8m by Transfermarkt, there is no denying how valuable Dallas has become to Leeds in the right-back position and it appears the decision to play him there has been somewhat a masterstroke by Bielsa.
The Northern Irishman has been excellent so far this season and will surely want to keep those performances going, otherwise, Ayling could be in a position to take over from him and make life a little difficult at Elland Road moving forward.
