Leeds United: Whites looking to offload goalkeeper Kiko Casilla

Despite only signing for Leeds United in January, Kiko Casilla may be about to be discarded by Marcelo Bielsa ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

According to Football Insider, the Whites are reportedly trying to find a buyer for the goalkeeper before the transfer window closes on August 8th.

Brought in on a four-and-a-half year deal from Real Madrid earlier this year, Casilla is thought to be amongst Leeds’ highest earners with a package worth more than £30,000-a-week (via Football Insider).

Whereas the Whites have yet to receive an official bid for the 32-year-old, it is hoped that by making themselves open to offers, they will be able to offload him this summer.

Although Casilla immediately established himself as Leeds’ first-choice shot-stopper upon his arrival at Elland Road, he has made an underwhelming start to life in England, keeping just six clean sheets in his first 19 games for the Yorkshire-based outfit (via Transfermarkt).

After being sent-off in a clash with Sheffield United in March (via BBC Sport), the Spaniard then delivered a dreadful showing in the second leg of the Whites’ play-off semi-final clash with Derby County in May, as his side crashed out of the competition 4-3 on aggregate. Indeed, his outing that day caused notable Football League pundit David Prutton to slam him.

‘Leeds looked like they were home and dry before Kiko Casilla lost his marbles’, he wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Given that Casilla ended the season with a lower average WhoScored rating (6.3) than the player who he replaced in the starting eleven, Bailey Peacock-Farrell (6.59), it could be argued that Bielsa may benefit from giving the Leeds academy graduate another chance to prove himself during the upcoming campaign.

Furthermore, when you factor in the £2.7m-rated ace’s (via Transfermarkt) salary, it may prove to be a wise financial decision by the Whites to part ways with him as it will free up a significant amount of money that could be re-invested elsewhere over the coming weeks.
