Leeds United: Whites plotting swoop to sign Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers

With Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa having already secured the services of Jack Harrison, Ben White, Helder Costa, Rafa Mujica and Liam McCarron for the upcoming Championship campaign, he may be about to swoop for Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers.

According to Football Insider, the Argentine is reportedly an admirer of the Bees captain and is ready to challenge Celtic for his signature.

Linked with a move to the Scottish Premiership side earlier this month, Sawyers was the subject of a £1.5m bid from the Hoops, as per the Sun, which was rejected by Brentford.

An ever-present for the Bees last season, Sawyers started 41 league games for the club (via WhoScored) as he helped to guide them to an 11th place finish in the second-tier.

Having entered the final year of his existing contract at Griffin Park (via Transfermarkt), the midfielder could be available for transfer this summer as the current window represents one of the last opportunities that Brentford will get to sell him before he becomes a free-agent in 2020.

Whereas he was used primarily as a central-midfielder by Thomas Frank last season, the £2.7m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) also featured in a more attacking role for the Bees, illustrating his versatility as a player.

Yet despite boasting a considerable amount of Championship experience having featured on 127 occasions at this level (via Transfermarkt), Sawyers may struggle to break the partnership of Mateusz Klich and Kalvin Phillips who made a combined total of 92 league appearances for Leeds during the previous campaign (via WhoScored).

Furthermore, when you factor in that both Phillips (6.98) and Klich (6.83) achieved a higher average WhoScored rating than the former Walsall player (6.73), it could be argued that he may not be an upgrade on the Whites’ existing options.

Therefore, unless he is able to guarantee Sawyers regular playing time, Bielsa may find it beneficial to steer clear of spending a sizeable fee for a player who could end up becoming another member of Leeds’ supporting cast.
